The short answer
Before roofing starts, confirm the project location, build stage, plans, roof geometry, material direction, penetrations, ventilation approach, site access, decision-makers, and the schedule dependencies that affect the roof system.
Use the plans to guide the scope
Roof plans, elevations, pitch changes, valleys, dormers, porch roofs, transitions, and accessory structures all affect the roofing conversation. Bring the best available plans early so the scope reflects the project rather than relying on a rough verbal description.
Coordinate penetrations and transitions
Plumbing vents, HVAC, chimneys, walls, skylights, solar components, and other penetrations need clear coordination. Ask which team is responsible for each detail and when it will be installed. Roofing quality depends on how these transitions are planned and sequenced.
Confirm readiness and access
Framing completion, decking, weather protection, material staging, driveway access, equipment, and site safety all affect scheduling. A roof can only be installed efficiently when the building and site are ready for the planned scope.
Document decisions before work begins
Confirm materials, colors, ventilation approach, accessory structures, approved changes, and the primary point of contact in writing. New construction has many moving parts; a clear roofing scope keeps the project aligned as the build moves forward.
